Happy Holidays 2010

Wishing all the cakesmix fans out there lots of holiday cheer and looking forward to sharing more crafting goodness in 2011. No major projects lately- still reading up on bobbin lace and practicing on some simple edgings for the most part. I only managed to make one homemade xmas present this year: a handknit washcloth to go along with a soap/candle set. Thought the washcloth would be a nice touch, and the recepient was happy soo... mission accomplished!

I love to use the Idiots Washcloth Pattern because you knit on the bias and it's garter stitch all the way with a simple edging you get by yarning over at the start of each row. So it's a fairly quick knit and doesn't require a lot of concentration, which is a nice break sometimes. If you enjoy quick knits I highly recommend the pattern. I use Sugar and Cream cotton yarn for these. I'll sometimes make larger versions and use them as face and hand washcloths too.

Anyways- I have a treat for the those who enjoy a little British humor. I think they're really quite clever!

I stumbled upon this while surfing the web yesterday. It appears to be a heavy-duty plastic template with pre-made holes to line up over fleece/flannel and punch out the holes, making a nice row of holes to crochet into. They are rounded to line up with corners, and there are also square templates to make and join blocks. I'm seriously intrigured. I really like the look of the crochet combined with the fleece- would be nice for gifts and baby blankets. Plus it's a tool I don't have!

It's a bunch of fleece blocks crocheted together. Seems the templates help everything come out neatly.

We'll see... If I do decide on it I will definitely post some finished projects. If anyone else has tried or heard about this product let me know.

Meet Wormie and friend!

Busy last few weeks, but have managed to keep practicing my bobbin lace. Made two worm bookmarks using size 8 pearl cotton. Love their little bead eyes!

The Specimens: wormie on left has half stitch body with linen stitch (CTC) head and tail. Wormie on right is done entirely in linen stitch with a few twists here and there to create the open bar designs. Both patterns are from A Beginner's Guide to Bobbin Lace by Gillian Dye & Adrienne Thunder. It's a good book for beginners and they go over the basics in setting up your pillow, winding bobbins, and explaining the basic stitches.

The fruits of labor thus far...

Current Project: Simple Old Danish Edging with 10 pairs of bobbins. I'm 90% sure I'm doing it right...but don't look too close because there are a few glitches here and there ;)

Some of the components of this piece: spiders, diamonds, and fans. Looking forward to learning how to turn a corner for decorationg hankies, etc.

Return of the Bobbin Lace

A few weeks ago I went to Lace Day w/ the Lacey Ladies of AZ and had a fabulous time! I look forward to this event every year- there are lace lessons, lace vendors and amazing exhibits. Hats made entirely of airy, open lace! Ornate bobbin lace trims that use over 50+ bobbins to make. It's the ultimate inspiration for me. So this year I'm going to start practicing more on my bobbin lace. Here is what I've been doing lately:

Beginner's Pattern: torchon lace ground with fan edge; 9 pairs of bobbins. The brown thing is known as a "sanity saver" a crochet strip made with dc, ch1 that creates little holes for the bobbins to slip into and not move around when you're taking a break.

Size 10 mercerized cotton. Hope to use finer thread as I get better!

So far I have a mix of danish and continental style bobbins. No spangled-beaded ones...yet :)

Finished piece being wet blocked: 7 in long and 1.25 in in width. A good start! Really like this pattern too.

Meanwhile crocheting a baby blanket for a gift. This is my first time working with Sensations rainbow boucle (sold at Joanns). It's 100% acrylic with a mossy texture and very soft. It varigates in color from light green to white. It's an interesting yarn that works for crocheting into big spaces (like granny square patterns), but seems it would be tedious if crocheting into single or double crochet stitches. It's pretty fuzzy, so not easy to see where your hook is going.

Ultimate plan: 20 granny squares will be combined to make a sweet baby blanket.

Has anyone else tried these chocolate covered fruit candies..? Soooo good! You don't feel so guilty because there's fruit inside. heehee. My husbands not a big candy person but even he liked them too.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Has it been 3+ months since my last post here? Whoa- I'll have to do something about that! Just returned recently from Pennsylvania- where I went to: THE EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY!!!

Okay, okay- it's a tourist attraction now- I didn't actually get put in prison. *whew*

I took like 600 pictures in Philadelphia, and probably 30 of the prison alone- it was just mesmorizing to be there, and feel the energy inside. I didn't *see* any ghosts, but we were there in the early afternoon... I think after dark might be a different story. We had an audio tour through the prison and then smaller tours on various topics lead by the park rangers: prison escapes, punishment, etc. Very interesting. I toured Alcatraz over 10 years ago and this is definitely a different feel. Very old... very dungeon like and very intimidating. The prison was purposely designed to make you feel that way and guess what, it really does. For those who plan on visiting the Philadelphia area I would highly recommend this attraction.

They Like Me, They Really Like Me!!

Wow, what a great surprise! This will be the second time one of my items has been featured in an Etsy treasury.

Other recent exciting news: I finally ordered my knitpicks options set- the nickel plated ones. Being a "picker" or continental knitter, I specifically wanted needles with sharper points. As you can see above, the new knit picks needles (on right) have a much sharper point than my Susan Bates needles (on left) and yarn slides along the needles much better too. This makes for much faster knitting.

Got sizes 4-11 in the kit along with cables. Love that I can interchange cable lengths with the needles. The needles are fabulous- I am very very very happy with them!

New Yarn! I think it's official-I've become a yarn snob. While I still have the trusty acyrlic stuff in my stash, the fancy yarns are all I want to work with right now. Went a little wild at the local yarn shop last weekend.

Sewing Crochet Edging to Towel- Tutorial

The following is one of my fav methods for sewing crochet edging to the bottom of a kitchen towel. It's a good alternative if you don't feel like crocheting directly into the fabric:

Make a length of crochet edging. Select a durable thread and cut a length about 2.5 times the length of the towel edge. I typically double strand the thread if it's fine. In this example I am using a single strand of size 80 mercerized cotton thread. Try to match thread to color of crochet lace.

Position the length of crochet lace in the desired position

Now "flip up" the edging so the wrong side is face up.

Pin into position.

Knot your thread in corner and bring needle from back to front of towel at tip of edging. Catch the edge of crochet lace before starting next stitch.

In this example I brought the needle through the lace on every 3rd stitch. Repeat to end of towel length.

Weave thread under some nearby stitches. Knot and cut thread.

Remove all straight pins and finger press lace down into normal position. Light iron if needed.

Walla! Pretty crochet towel edging!

Crochet chain headband

My latest accessory: triple crochet chain headband with flower. I included lots of goodies in this one: crochet flower with mirror and crystal beads embedded in center and size 80 thread crochet green leaf. Love how it's so versatile and can tie to fit any head size. Makes a pretty choker and bracelet wrap too. More pretty pics of this are in my etsy shop.

It's also served as a good break from crocheting lace on kitchen towels, but I still have a few more pairs I'd like to make as gifts for friends.

I've also been fascinated by working with small circular mirrors in crochet. I've made a few pendants, and would like to try making some mirror-centered rings as well. I've named this pendant the "Super-Six."
Speaking of super, I'm super excited about my new knitpicks knitting needles that I recently ordered. They should arrive any day now. I've heard they have sharper points than most knitting needles, which is exactly what I want and use as "picker" or continental style knitter. Should be helpful for cable knitting as well! We'll find out soon enough!

Red Crochet Lace on Kitchen Towels

Hot off the steel crochet hook! Some lovely little kitchen towels. I recently purchased these towels and decided they needed a little lace. I posted both to my etsy shop today. These are really nice towels- 100% cotton twill weave. I may make a few more if time.

Also have pics of the project in progress. I wash and lightly iron both towel and lace edging before joining them. To join, I position the lace "flipped up with wrong side face up" above the bottom edge of the towel, then whip stitch them together using sewing thread. After sewing is complete, the lace simply folds down and then I lightly iron again. I like the look of the lace hanging from the bottom edge of the towel.

Finished attaching some of my crochet lace to a kitchen towel tonight. I want to make a whole sleu of these- but it's going to take time, like forever! I even hand-stitch my lace to the towel, rather than use a machine. Eventually I'd like to put a few sets up in my etsy shop as well.

Tatted Pendants

A quick post as this holiday weekend settles down to a close. I tatted up 3 pieces this weekend! They are all pendants and I posted them to etsy, which is also a big deal because it's been over a year since I've posted any new items. I'm geting more comfortable with designing my own tatting thru trial and error so we'll see where that takes me. I'm especially proud of the tatted trio (first pic), which features tatting over small circular mirrors. Really gives the tatting a neat reflection and effect. I amazed by how many more tatters there are on etsy now vs. just two years ago.

Size 80 Tatted Hanky Finished

Size 80 Tatted Hanky is done! Wrapped it up just late yesterday night. Super uber dainty! Notice my attempt to "pose" the doily along with complementary items. Awkward? Yes. But- it just adds so much interest! Everyone needs a hanky draped over a basket right?

It was nice reaquainting myself with the teeny tiny thread. My next go at it will be more complex. Using the mini shuttle seems to make it go faster. I used a mini steel crochet hook to attach the tatting to the hanky as I progressed.

Starting my fourth tatted hanky! I'm using size 80 DMC cotton in ecru for this one and sporting my new 1" mini mother-of-pearl tatting shuttle. I'm making steady progress. This hanky is going to be especially dainty!

Also finished up a little cross stitched rose motif for my mom. It will be personalized and framed for a mother's day gift along with some other goodies.

My 2010 county fair entries: pair of tatted hankies & a tatted doily

Officially entered my county fair goodies this afternoon. A pair of two cotton hankies with 100% silk tatted edging and a small tatted doily. I completed the pink hanky just last night- right up to the deadline! I used a pattern from a book called Tatted Handkerchiefs. I especially like how this book has a few patterns for the scalloped edged hankies like the ones I used. Tatting directly into the fabric as you go is also more convenient and takes the guess work out of how long to make the length of the lace before attaching it. I used Gudebrod size "FF" silk thread for the pink one, which is similar to size 20 thread. LACIS carries this brand in several sizes.

Next tatted hanky will be in size 80 thread- it's time!

Starfish Loves You

You will see how this starfish is quite special from the rest, because starfish REALLY loves you! Eh, but in a sort of unhealthy compulsive way... :)

So here is my large felt plushy version of Starfish. He's my first plushy and was fun to make. I especially like his eyes- all intense! He's ready to give you a big 'ole hug. Oh and he's pretty fancy, his body is covered in freshwater pearls and he comes with a pocket on his backside.

Tunisian Crochet

Whipped up some cotton tunisian crochet dish scrubbies last week. They are about 3.75" x 6" inches long. I'm curious to see how well they work compared to the traditional crochet stitch scrubbies. Tunisian crochet is a sort of combination between knitting and crochet. A long double-ended crochet hook is used. I've seen some beautiful afghans made entirely in this stitch.

Tatted Hearts

My very first pair of tatted hearts. Pattern is Susan K Fuller's "Heart's Desire." Such a beautiful pattern. The square motif below the hearts is called "Lavendar Lace" and is from the book Tatting Doilies & Edgings by Rita Weiss. Not sure if I'll continue joining motifs or leave it at two.

My trusty shuttles!! Don't laugh, but I recently learned that the "tail" on my Aero shuttle is actually a bobbin winder. Ah, now it all makes sense- I thought it was just a decorative thing :/ I'm using my hot pink Lacis shuttle for most projects lately. Love having that picot picker on the end. I've also used the large Tatsy orange shuttle and like how it stores a ton of thread.

Ordered some goodies from LACIS this week- should be arriving any day now!!

Tatted Lace Hanky #2

Completed a few more tatted goodies since my last post. This is a special tatted hanky I made for a friend of my MIL. It was a custom made birthday present!

Close up of edging. I used a single crochet row to attached the tatted lace. Sure gives it a nice, clean look. Used Lizbeth size 20 thread in 100% cotton.

Knit Socks in a Weekend

My husband has been waiting very patiently for his very own pair of handknit socks. He finally got them today! I originally intended to have them made by Christmas, but only had one knit - so decided this weekend it was time to pony up and get the other one done! Hey better late than never, right?! I used a cuff-down pattern with simple stockinette stitch for the foot, toe, and heel, with 2x2 ribbing for the ankle.

The yarn was a treat to work with. Panda silk in nutmeg tones: 52% bamboo, 43 % machine washable merino wool, and 5% combed silk. Two 50g skeins were enough to make a pair of socks for size-13.5 feet.
Thank goodness!

Tatted Lace Handkerchief: my first HDT project!

I have been wanting to tat up a handkerchief for the longest time. I have always found them interesting. Not only can they be aesthetic, but the handkerchief has a history too:

"There was the system of signs to express this or that wish, and one of the elements of this system was a handkerchief."

The plan recently came together when I got this dainty powder blue handkerchief from Snowgoose at this year's lace day and decided a tatted edging would be the perfect fit for using my stashed HDT (Hand-dyed thread), which I ordered from LadyShuttleMaker.

This is the most luxurious thread I have ever worked with. The size 20 silk just glided when I went to close rings and make chains. There is definitely a difference between using silk and mercerized cotton. I can understand why hdt is so addictive now!

Best of all the 9.5 in. x 9.5 in handkerchief used all 40 yds of my hdt. I ended up with about 6 inches of spare thread!

Used a whipstitch to attach the edging. The spoke edges on the handkerchief helped keep spacing even. Can't wait to get more of these handkerchiefs in different colors and of course more silk hdt!

Lace: the perfect accent

My latest inspiration has been edgings, particularly crochet lace and tatted lace. I think these edgings dress up a plain 'ole dishtowel rather well. Very shabby chic. It has been a while since I picked up the steel crochet hooks, so making these has been a good way to ease back into it.

I have found this book most useful, especially when making long lengths of lace. It's called 111 Easy Edgings. I picked up my copy at a Ben Franklin in MO, but I've seen this book in most craft stores as well. Instead of the traditional long-chain method, where you often must estimate how long you want your lace to be, these patterns are worked top to bottom so you build length as you go- it makes things much easier.

Felting

I am working on my first ever 100% wool felted piece. This is a picture of the "sole" of a knitted slipper I will be felting. Next to it is the about the size of the slipper I need once all is said and done and felted.

I'm a little weary.. will the wool really shrink up that much? I did felt a test swatch and the wool did felt pretty well and shrink, but still... I have this fear that all this knitting will go to waste if the slipper does not end up fitting. It will really have to shrink up significantly to get it wearable. At this point I am continuing to work on it but will probably felt it and find out for sure before making the mate. If worst comes to worst I guess I can always use a giant felted slipper as a remote control cozy?? (lol)

Jello Poke Cake

For all my fellow sweet-toothers out there I had to make a post about my new fav cake: Jello Poke Cake!

I tried it for the first time at a picnic last weekend and knew it was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. To make this cake you simply prepare and bake the cake mix of your choice per package directions. After the cake is baked, use a fork or skewers to poke holes all over the cake. Pour hot jello mix into the holes (powder mix + hot water- do not add the 2 cups of cold water). Then let set for about 4 hours and finally, add your frosting!

I recommend this recipe if you are interested in making one. For my cake I used white cake mix, cherry jello, and strawberry frosting. Triple yum. Can't wait to try a lemon one or maybe a rainbow confetti mix next time!

Felting Experiment

I want to try making a pair felted slippers. locking fibers=increased durability, right?So I made some test swatches yesterday and tried felting them to see how well the wool felts and amount of shrinkage. It looks like the pieces shrink up more vertically than horizontally. I lost about an inch vertically and maybe 1/2 an inch horizontally. The wool is mystery wool, I got it from a kit a while back. Its not the most premo stuff, but I do like the colorway. So I've started making the first slipper.

Knit Neck Scarf Trio

Yay! Three knit neck scarves completed! All using different yarns:

Cotton/Wool blend (yellow)- soft cotton with a nice wool stretchiness.

Alpaca/Mohair (brown)- baby alpaca and super kid mohair make a very organic, soft, fuzzy scarf. Great stretch too.

Silk/Wool (aqua)- very luxurious texture with softness, silky sheen, and stretch.

It's been a treat experimenting with boutique yarns. I love them all! These will make fabulous gifts too.

Hairball scarf update #2

Okay just had to do another update before I call it a night here:

Got another 4" knitted up this evening so I'm happy for that! Can't stop talking about this mohair. It's just been show and tell non-stop to whoever will listen. "Look, look," I say..."This yarn looks like my mom's hair!"

Maybe sometime I'll try knitting the mohair alone for a real delicate, lightweight fabric scarf...mmmm, possibilities. I know at some point I need to give felting another try too. I found a pattern for felted knit slippers that looks delightful. So much- so much!

I need to call it a night.

Hairball scarf update

Okay it's day 3 of the "hairball scarf." Hairball, is an all inclusive term meaning baby alpaca, super kid mohair, and silk. All the fibers used in this scarf came from baby animals! I am going a little slower with great care in knitting it up out of respect!

It's coming out really nice...can't wait to try on the finish product.

Weekend Update

It has been a good weekend so far! Woke up to an etsy sale on Friday!! Sold one of my favorite items- a black crochet lace bracelet with a red rose. Also sent a free gift with this order- one of my new crochet flower rings. These rings are my newest items, available for sale at my etsy shop. They are a perfect fit for springtime.

Also been up to more neck scarf knitting. Made a trip up to Jessica Knits in North Scottsdale this afternoon to pick up some gourmet yarns. We're talking- super kid mohair& silk, alpaca, and linen yarns. Adorable shop, very boutique-y. I was in the area so thought I'd check it out.

I ended up with a bag of goodies. Most notably these: Rowan kidsilk haze (70% super kid mohair, 30% silk) and Blue Sky Alpaca Melange 100% baby alpaca.

So when you combine baby alpaca and baby goat you get..... THIS! The two yarns come out to about a sport weight feel and are knitting up beautifully so far. The kidsilk haze gives the scarf a very organic, soft fuzzy feel. Best of all, it just looks like a ball of my mom's hair.

I love springtime and while Arizona springtime is more like Summertime, (we're already hitting the 90's!) I'm still enjoying it. It's a dry heat, right?! Been spending more time outside gardening, and going to the park the last few weekends.

And speaking of springtime and gardening....I thought I'd share a pattern to make your own crochet flower ring! This is a a sweet project- perfect for using up your odds and ends. Instant gratification as well.

Flower:
yarn: mix and match up to 3 yarns to get a worsted weight feel

Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring

R1: (Ch 5, sl st) 7 times in ring

R2: Working behind R1 in ch 5 spaces, ch1, sc in first space, (ch 2, sc in next space) 6 times, ch 2; join with sl st to top of first sc- 7 sc.

R3: (Ch 5, sl st in same sc, ch 5, sl st in next ch-2 space, ch 5, sl st in next sc) 7 times.

Finish off. Use ends to attach bead or button to center of flower. Tie and cut.

Ring Base:
yarn: cascade fixation, 98.3% cotton, 1.7% elastic or other sport weight yarn- about 3 yards worth
pair of size 3 knitting needles
Size: 7/8 ring size- adult

CO 16 sts using long tail cast on method
R1: K1, P1 across. Slip last st purlwise

Repeat last row (in rib pattern) until piece measures about 1/2 inch in width.

BO in rib pattern, sew ends together to make ring loop, use tails to attach loop to underside of flower. Tie & cut.

New Knit Project

Okay so today was a great day. First off, the weather has been gorgeous- it's like early summer already. Spent the morning doing some computer stuff, chores, etc, and then got outside to enjoy the day with my bf.

We went to a yarn shop I had never browsed around in before and had a blast. I usually go to Tempe Yarn and Fiber, but was in the Scottsdale area so gave AZ Knitting and Needlepoint a try. Both stores have a great selection and best of all I love the personal help and service that only yarn shops can provide you.

I needed some nice sportweight yarn for a knit neck scarf. Found a luxurious wool/silk blend in double knittting weight. Pure bliss to work with-I'm really excited.

Spent rest of afternoon knitting in the park while sipping iced coffee and watching a very entertaining game of soccer. Came home did some gardening and fixed up some bbq salmon for din din.

Did I tell ya it was a great day or what!

More Scrubbies

Knit Neck Scarf Done!

Thrilled with this knit neck scarf:
1.) It's made from soft cotton fleece (cotton/wool blend)
2.) It's banana yellow
3.) It's wearable

I especially like how you can sort of roll down the scarf (see bottom pic) for a lighter look. Received lots of complements so far so will have to make more. Maybe with a cotton/silk blend next time...hmmmm?

This pattern would also look good in neutral/nature colors.

Started the knit neckscarf- see previous post for link to pattern. First off, I'm using up some stash yarn for this so yay for that. I found some Cotton Fleece by Brown Sheep Co. Love this stuff: 80% cotton, 20% wool. The softness of cotton, but with added stretch. $9/skein but you get 215 yds. Perhaps I will be able to get two scarves out of it...

This pattern is mostly garter stitch, but I did learn how to "divide" and make the ribbed loop so that one end of the scarf will be able to slip thru and tie.

It's a dainty feel working with size 5 needles for a change. I'm working on trying to knit without looking- like the real experienced knitters do! That way I can watch my computer "tweets" come in while knitting. Multitasking ! I'm getting there, but can't help and look down every 20 sec or so to make sure I'm not skipping stitches.

I want to try dressing these up a bit. Like give them eyeballs or lace or patches or something. Any other ideas?

Now the next project I want to try is this knitted neck scarf. Saw it in a recent Martha Stewart Mag and love the look. I've always wanted to make one of those pull-through-the-loop scarves. Pattern looks pretty straightforward too.

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too!

My absolutely new favorite cake flavor is
Red velvet. I did not make this cake, but I did crochet the placemat under it. So this can officially count as a "crafty" post.

This was one of those mini squares of cake you get at the local grocery store. They are about 5 x5 inches or so. Ate half the other day and managed to hold off on the other half until tonight. Let me tell you it was not easy!

Just thought I'd share a piece of virtual cake with y'all. Oh yeah and that's cream cheese frosting too! Now I'm just rubbing it in ain't I?

My Etsy Experience

I've been selling my items on Etsy since July '08. After much encouragement from friends and family I decided to take the leap and see what would happen. It has been a great experience for me. The biggest reward is getting to know my customers and thinking "wow, I'm shipping my items across the nation!" The positive feedback I receive and repeat customers makes me feel great.

I am very pleased with Etsy as a place to buy and sell and would recommend the site to anyone who is interested in selling handmade products- especially newbies! In addition to just selling, you can participate in forums, online social networking opportunities, or join an etsy team. I've recently joined the Etsy Bloggers and am pretty excited about it. I enjoy blogging and am eager to meet other etsy crafters. The hardest part about etsy is "balancing!" Etsy has so many ways of getting you involved in (e.g. forums, message boards, groups, etc) that it is easy to let several hours a day fly by in front of your computer.

Handknit Booties

Sent off a pair of knit booties today. Been getting several requests for them lately thru my etsy shop. Designed some new cards to send along with them too. I especially like the little metal "thank you" tags. Usually I'll attach them to my organza sachets but they look great tied to cards too.

Thinking very seriously about making a wallet out of plarn. Plarn is upcycled plastic bags that are cut into strips, joined, and used as yarn.

Very fun. I've made some plarn tote bags before too.

This Past Week's Projects

I have a few pics of some things I've been working on. The pink square is a crochet dishcloth 11" x 11"- 100% cotton. A family member saw me working on it and has already claimed it as their own, so will just have to work up some more.

And then we have another set of blue adult booties in progress, which I hope to complete by this weekend. Looking forward to family visiting from out of town this weekend and getting to work on my cro-tat freeform. Have to get to cleaning up too...

Renaissance Festival Pictures

First time at the Renaissance Festival. I will summarize my experience with a quick Do/Do Not list:

Do:
Allow 4+ hours for maximum viewing experience
Feel free to dress up and show off your handcrafted goods
Try the giant Turkey leg!
Bring ample cash me lady!

Don't:
Expect to leave early for other appointments as Ren Fest is all absorbing!
Feel self conscious about wearing those fairy wings- bring it on!
Go alone- Ren Fest is a group effort.
Worry if you cant speak "Renaissance" early modern English. You will still navigate well around the festival.

In short, I had a BLAST and would totally go again next year! Loved the costumes: foxtails, chainmail, lace hair snoods, capes, etc. So many people wore handmade customs that were amazingly adorned. I expecially liked seeing so many feather fascinator headbands. My favorite place there was the "Croft" area. Spinners, weavers, knitters, and basketmakers were gathered around doing their thing. Fabulous!

And last but not least, a photo of the "Vegetable Justice" booth in which you got to throw tomatoes at a man yelling out at you!

Freeform Cro-Tatting!

I started this tatted edging last summer because I just felt like tatting. It has gotten pushed aside for other projects, but I keep uncovering it and working on it. I've had no idea what to do with it. I usually take great comfort in following prescribed patterns to a tee, or knowing exactly what I'm making, what it's going to become, and to whom it might be betrothed to. I know,- type A all the way baby!

So let me emphasize the big jump into the unknown as I attempt to FREEFORM from here.
This morning I took the 6"in of edging and joined it in the round, then crocheted a ring of chain loops around and am now making a round of tatted chains with picots. So maybe this is the start of a doily now? Hmmm.... Will take more pics as I progress here....

Booties UPGRADE!

Some lucky person got an upgrade on their booties this morning. After wearing them everyday straight for 4 months and several machine washings, the bottoms were starting to wear a bit. So... got out the supplies and went to town. I darned up a few spots on the sole where the yarn was wearing thin. Then added felt bottoms with blanket stitch around. And last but not least put some way cool star patches on. This is definitely the PLATINUM upgrade as far as knit booties go. Needless to say- he's thrilled.

Early Spring Cleaning

It may only be February, but the weather here is so gorgeous, it is like spring time. I am inspired to clean! I started this evening with the craft room. The yarn is officially all back on the shelves and that's a huge step right there! I also uncovered a steel crochet hook I had been looking around for the last week or so. Exciting stuff!

Baby blanket is almost at the right length, I have about another 2.5 inches in length to go until I have a perfect 26 1/2 in. square. Then comes the fun part- a hood in the corner and some sort of shell edging for the border.

I've always loved the pineapple crochet motif- one of those designs that just crochets up so elegantly and is commonly found in vintage doily patterns. After tinkering around with the idea for a few weeks now, I decided to try out a crochet lace headband using the pineapple design. I am very pleased with the end result. Used 100% acrylic yarn. Very soft and stretchy.

Crochet Nylon Net Scrubbie Pattern

Finished crocheting 4 more nylon net scrubbies today! Thought I'd share a pattern for circular scrubbies using double crochet stitches:

Materials: Nylon netting, cut into strips 1.5 inches in width and join. (How to cut and join strips)
Size “J” crochet hook (6.00MM)
Finished size: approx 5.0 inches diameter

Directions – crochet in the round.
ss= slip stitch, dc= double crochet, sts= stitches

R1: Ch2, work 12 dc in 2nd ch from hook, join to first dc with ss. 12 sts.

R2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), dc in same st as ch 3, 2 dc in each st around, join to top of beg ch 3 with ss. 24 sts.

R3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, *1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st* repeat from * to * around. Join to top of beg ch 3 with ss. 36 sts.

R4: Ch 3, dc in same st as ch3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts*, repeat from * to * around. Join to top of ch 3 with ss. 48 sts.

FAQ'S

Q: Why does my netting tear when I crochet with it?
A: I always try and start with the sturdiest, scratchiest netting I can find. Unfortunately, not all nylon netting has the same feel. Another tip I find is that cutting the nylon "lengthwise straight grain" (see pic) makes for a more sturdy strip, less prone to tearing. Plus- you will get longer strips, which means less tying and joining.

Q: Any tips for seeing the stitches better while working?
A: Crocheting with nylon net is a challenge even for experienced crocheters. You will mostly need to go off of "feel." If you are making a scrubbie out of single crochet stitches, one tip that I can share is to place a safety pin under the both loops of your first sc when beginning a round. This takes the guesswork out of "where" to join when you come to the end of a round.

Flower POWER nylon net scrubbie. I used a popcorn stitch for extra scrubbiness. Made 6 scrubbies and used up all my hot pink nylon for now. So will have to run down to Joanns for more soon. It seems I can get about 5-6 out of 5 yards, depending how I cut it. Cutting the nylon into strips is the trickiest part for me, but once I have it balled up like yarn I can really marathon crochet with it.

Booties, and Washcloths, and Scrubbies oh my!

I don't know if handknit booties and washcloths are the way of the future- but I am enjoying making them. My boyfriend and I use ours everyday and just love 'em. Started these washcloths yesterday on the light rail. Same yarn was used for both, but one is knitted and the other crocheted. I can't decide which way I like better, so figured this is a good have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too compromise. For a handtowel, I really prefer the stretchiness and drape of the knit version, but can understand why so many people like the texture of crochet for kitchen work and cleaning up.

It's officially February! Looking forward to Valentines day! And there's nothing more romantic than giving someone handmade booties! I'm just sayin'... :)

I don't know how, but somehow I managed to spend all day on etsy today. It was a gorgeous day out and there were many other things I COULD have done...but, it was just me, pandora, and laptop all day!

I added 4 pairs of handknit booties to my shop, researched how to make resin jewelry, tried to self-learn Photoshop CS3, and last but not least- designed and printed a new set of business cards! PHew...

Tomorrow I will have to get some real things done. :)

Think Hot Pink!

Maybe I'm just anticipating Valentines day or perhaps I was just in a pink mood- but I have recently acquired all these pink goodies!

The pic doesn't do this red heart yarn justice- it is like NEON hot pink! I don't know how red heart does it?! The fabric underneath is nylon netting (future scrubbies), and some fun fur that was on sale! I can't wait to whip up some hot pink knit booties with fur trim. That would definitely be my dream pair. Ah, one of these days!

Blanket update #2 and more

I must admit, at one time I had my doubts about cotton yarn. My first big crochet project ever was to make a lace jacket. I knew I would need a lot of yarn for this project so went to Walmart and bought the biggest ball of yarn they sold, which happened to be a big ball of 4-ply worsted cotton. Mind you this was years ago- before I understood the ways of fiber! I was fiber illiterate! Anyways I crocheted the whole jacket out of this heavy duty cotton. I finished it and was most proud, even though the thing had the feel of chain mail. I got into softer fibers after that!

Now, I'm really into handknit washcloths and towels. Sugar 'n Cream 100% cotton yarn is where it's at if you're in the mood for making them. I went down to Joanns today and picked up a bunch of balls on sale! Love these colors too. I especially can't wait to knit up the red, white, and blue colorway. Finished two washcloths this weekend and will get them posted to my etsy shop sometime tonight.

The baby blanket is progressing! I think I'm about 2/3 done (up to 18" out of 26") and will then add a hood and maybe some hot pink fun fur around the sides? Fun fur is compatible with babies, right? If not, someone let me know and I'll omit it. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, it's great working with this lion brand 'pound of love.' When a fiber is easy on my hands it makes all the difference, especially since I tend to do marathon knit/crochet projects.

And last but not least, a pic of another project I started just yesterday. It's a fine lace crochet beauty box. I am almost done with the bottom and then will make the lid, starch and shape it all. I'm not sure yet if I will sell it or keep. I don't make fine crochet lace as often as I used too and consider these pieces heirlooms/keepsakes. I will post another pic once the box is completely finished and starched. It will look very different!

Blanket Update #1

Making progress on the baby blanket. This will probably take a few weeks. Up to about 5" x 28" now. Finished size should be about 28" square. I've knit a 13 foot scarf before but never a blanket of any kind so this should be an adventure. It's kinda of like long distance track...just do it! I really like how the texture is working up and this soft acrylic is easy on the hands.

Baby Afghan?

Just finished a large custom order for knit booties on etsy and am now picking up the crochet hook for something a little different. I love switching back and forth between knitting, crochet, tatting, quilting, beading, etc... it's good to switch it up. Today I decided to start a new project- a crochet hooded-baby blanket. A friend of mine is having a baby girl this spring, so this would be a perfect baby shower gift. So far I only have about 3" of it worked. I need approx 28." Good thing I'm starting this now as it will probably take a while! The yarn is soft lion brand acrylic. Pretty nice! It's a light pink, and the biggest ball of yarn (POUND of love) I've ever had in my possession. According to the instructions, one ball of this stuff is all that's needed. We'll see :)

Beetle Bug Necklace

Yes, it's a real bug and no, it's not alive. It's a pendant. Seriously- how cool is this!

It was a beautiful day today- visited a local gem and mineral show this afternoon in Mesa and found some really unique things. Of course I was instantly drawn to the jewelry, particularly these bug pendants. Of all the ones for sale, I think the green beetle was the most beautiful and least creepy. It was beaming iridescent green in the sunlight when I saw it and I couldn't resist! Bought one for my mom too. She was a little creeped out at first but I know she'll come around. You can even see the little hairs on it's legs.

Besides bug pendants, also bought some pearl beaded bracelets, glass pendants, and a calcified rock from a cave. A very positive shopping experience. It was great to see so many people passionate about rocks and minerals.

Still working on a set of knit booties for a custom order, then would like to make some more knit and crochet washcloths to post in the shop. Got to ride the light rail today which was an experience! Took me about 3 hours to go round trip from Phoenix to Tempe. I do think it will be useful when going downtown for events and concerts and I like the train design too. Everyone riding was in a good mood. It's tempting to think about all the knitting I could get done if I used it daily instead of driving... :)

The newest addition to my etsy shop: Happy Hats! Size: Adult M-L, in a variety of colors. These are so fun to make and a great excuse to buy more and more yarn! My circular knitting needles are currently working on a set of booties! Many friends and family were lucky enough to receive matching hat & bootie sets for Christmas this year. They really went over well!

My lacework is a little on hold for now. It's been worsted weight or bust! I won't stray from my tatting and crochet doilies too long! :)

The holidays are flying by- so much good food and family time. I've been enjoying these last few weeks very much. Looking forward to the New Year 2009!

Astro weenie tree

This year's tree featured: broccoli, cauliflower, colby, sharp, and pepper jack cheeses, lil' cherub tomatoes, green and black olives, hard salami, beef smokies, gherkin pickles, and radishes!

I really had a blast making it and highly recommend these for potlucks and holiday parties! You can even make a desert-only tree. I've googled some images of astro weenie trees and there are a LOT of variations out there! A great opportunity to great creative and feed bunches of people!

Lace Sachet - oh la la!

This was my Sunday project this weekend. It took me all morning to crochet the lace and then afternoon to dig my sewing machine out of the closet and make the tulle baggie inside. I wet blocked the lace overnight and just added the potpourri this morning. Spicy cinnamon scent-mmmm.
Sachet measures about 3" tall.

Below is my most recent bobbin lace piece. Some trim featuring Torchon ground with fans! We are getting there-- and now that I have 12+ pairs of bobbins, it's for reals!

I can't wait for crochet lace and bobbin lace to meet and collaborate! It's gonna be good!

Bobbin Lace and Such!

I have officially jumped into the world of bobbin lace making. Went to a bobbin lace demonstration at the annual "Lace Day" exhibit this past weekend and a girlfriend proposed we try it together. Bam! The ladies at lace day helped us each pick out a foam cookie pillow form, beginners manual, and a set of 12 bobbins.

It seems like constructing your own pillow is the initiation ritual for jumping into the world of bobbin lace. The foam pillow must be covered with felt and then fabric. It has been a while since I've worked with fabric so was a little overwhelmed at first. I googled for instructions and fortunately found the info to make it happen. I ended up encasing the pillow form in black wool felt and then tacked super soft, red velour on top. My working cloth under the bobbins is calico cotton. Eventually I'd like to make a zip-up pillow case with handles to fit the whole thing into when I'm not using it. I'm rather pleased with how it all turned out! So I passed the first test. Today I've been following the instruction book and working some simple samplers. I need to buy more bobbins tho- 12 is not enough! The sweetest thing about bobbin lace is that the bobbins are worked in pairs- like couples. I love the sound of the bobbins when they roll and click together.

These are my first bobbin lace pieces. They are supposed to be sorta funky b/c they are samplers. Once I get more bobbins I will try making a bookmark.

And in other related news, I brought home my State Fair Winners this week! Perhaps I can get some new items together in time for the County Fair this spring...

Texture Crochet

Latest completed project-10.5 x 10.5 inches crochet washcloth featuring crocheted cables. I used light green peaches and cream 100% cotton.
It is the ultimate washcloth!!!!

Next up: I've decided to try tatting a crown. This will be my *first* attempt at 3-D tatting. So far all I have done is work on the base of the crown then I will join the round and start to work UP!
I'm using size 10 cotton for this.

Fall Craft Boutique

Sharing my *sweet* finds from a local craft boutique this weekend. I got some lovely handknit and hand crochet items including: slippers, scarfs (granny squares, white knitted, and golden chenille), washclothes and muffler! Also a few crosstitch pattern books. I'm especially excited over the slippers. I bought 2 pair for myself and 2 pairs for gifts. What I really like about them is they are knit/crocheted using 2 strands of worsted weight yarn, so they have a nice "cushy" feel when you walk in them. So perfect for the winter months. I feel most prepared now!

Tarantula Cookies!

Cute and edible! I made these for a halloween party-chocolate covered tarantulas. (cookie dough, pretzel sticks) Yummers! Can't believe halloween is next week. It's getting a little cooler out- but still in the high 80's during the day. I want to crochet some neckwarmers soon.

My main halloween-inspired piece this year was a thread crochet doily. I like the colors because they remind me of candy corn :) Size 10 mercerized cotton and about 8 inches in diameter.

Joanns is having a sale on sculpey clay through the end of today, but I'm going to try hard to ignore that seeing as my craft stash is already ginormous! And speaking of the stash- I am using some of my ribbon yarn to make a triangle shaw. I'm about 3/4 done and will add fringe too. I do like the colorway very much. btw- the light-up knitting needles are actually pretty cool. When you turn them on it feels as if you are knitting with light sabers!

Sunday Afternoon Craft Project

At first sight it may look like a carrot, but look again! It's a crocheted washcloth! 100% soft peaches and cream brand cotton. I have a small stash of the stuff and decided today was the day for a crocheted washcloth! A very good Sunday afternoon project indeed. The worsted weight cotton has a great feel and I like the crochet texture. Debating whether I should make a few more and sell as a bunch on etsy or just keep 'em all for me! ha ha! In the meantime, I'm going to try and think up of other veggies/fruit color schemes I can emulate thru crochet washclothes. This will probably lead to buying even more of the peaches and cream cotton in different colors- so much for using up the stash! :)

State Fair Results are In!

I think I did pretty good at the AZ state fair this year. Ended up with 1-1st place, 2-2nd places, and 2-3rd places. I think the Lacey Ladies ofAZ were impressed- they left me a little "hello" note on one of my items.

So yay! I will probably end up going back before the end of the month. There is so much to see and do there- it's incredible. This year my dad came too and he really had a blast.

This is a new piece I've worked up this afternoon. It's crocheted lace. You may recognize it's a pineapple motif fashioned into a cuff. Love the 3-D rose on top too. Looks pretty elegant/victorian. Busy week ahead. Family is coming to visit and I have a lot of around the house chores to work on. Have some new ideas for items to make for etsy too.

How to Crochet a Nylon Net Scrubbie- Tutorial and Pattern!

Here is a quick tutorial with pattern for making those nylon net scrubbies everybody is after! I found out about these during a visit to the Midwest this summer, and have been eager to make some since.

MATERIALS:

Nylon netting- about 3 yards. When you go to the craft store this is the more scratchy, abrasive feeling netting. You may also find tulle, which is also netted, but will be softer to the touch and not as abrasive for scrubbing those pots!

Size K (6.5mm) crochet hook

Optional- ball winder. If you love to work with yarn in general, this is a great tool and is worth the $! You will be able to ball up the netting with ease.

PREP DIRECTIONS:

First you must cut the nylon netting into 2" strips. There are several ways to do this. I would highly recommend keeping the nylon folded nicely- as it usually comes from the fabric store. Fold it a few times so you have a smaller roll to work with and then get out a rotary cutter and slice off your strips. This is the quickest. Scissors will also do the trick too though. As you slice off your 2" strips, begin to join them together at the ends. Just a simple double-knot will do. Don't worry, the knots don't show once your done crocheting the scrubbie :)

After joining all your strips you will end up with a big puffy cloud of netting! Go ahead, take a moment to throw it up in the air and roll around in it. It's fun!

Next, ball all that mess up. Here's where that ball winder really comes in handy. Look how nicely this winds up. I highly recommend spending a few extra $ and getting the Royal brand. Works great.

Now it's time to start crocheting in the round!

GEOMETRIC SCRUBBIE PATTERN:

With nylon net, ch 4. Join with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch1, 6 sc in ring- 6 sc. Join with sl st in first sc.

Round 2: Ch1, 2 sc in same sc as joining and in each sc around-12dc. Join.

Round 3: Ch1, sc in same sc as joining, 2 sc in next sc, *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around- 18 sc. Join.

Round 4: Ch1, sc in same sc as joining and in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around-24 sc. Join.

Round 5: Ch1, sc in same sc as joining and in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around- 30 sc. Join.

Round 6: Ch1, sc in same sc as joining and in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; *sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around- 36 sc. Join.

Round 7: Ch1, sc in same sc as joining and in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around- 42 sc. Join. Finish off.

TIPS
Your scrubbie should work up like this. Pretend the nylon is just like regular yarn as you work with it. You don't need to fold the strips in half as you crochet. When you reach a knot (from joining the strips) just keep crocheting like it's not there- we will worry about the little ends that poke out later. Just keep crocheting and it will work up like this.

Once you finish off you may see little ends from the knotted strips poking out from the back of your work. Some may already be semi-worked into other sc stitches and you can just go ahead and cut those. Others can be woven in on the wrong side with a large tapestry needle. Just hide and cut. No sweat!

Finished! This scrubbie is larger than most. It's about 5" across. That's mega scrubbing power!
Also you'll end up with a sort of geometric design, which looks kinda cool.

USES:
These scrubbies can be used for a variety of tasks, from cleaning pots and pans, to wiping bugs off a windshield. Enjoy!

Totally anxious. Been working all day on finishing a tatted cuff. It's blocking now and should be ready for photos and posting to etsy by tomorrow evening. I work all day tomorrow so am still up trying to get every last minute out of Friday night that I can.

Home remodeling is officially finished. Phew. Time to move on with my life. :) Cough, cough *gym* cough.

Today Banadura taught me the art of Sculpey clay beads and cane-ing! Sure was fun. She is the best and if you can write a haiku you might just win this!

My recent attempts at Celtic tatting. Yes! You can witness my journey if you follow the picture from left to right. It did take me a few tries until I realized the mechanics of creating long chains and then gingerly manipulating them to create loops. Still need a bit more practice until I can feel confident about it. I found this book called "Celtic Tatting Knots & Patterns" by Rozella Linden. The pictures and instructions are very clear to follow and the pattern for the little flower in the picture is included too. I found it at Hobby Lobby, but I'm sure you can find it thru Amazon, Lacis, etc.

Monsoon Season Continues

We had more monsoon-ish weather today. High speed winds and rain. Good weather for watching home videos. Saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix this evening. Now I have to patiently wait for the last two books of the series to come out on film. I'm especially looking forward to seeing how book 6- HP & the Half-Blood Prince is portrayed on film. Working on a knitted washcloth- which is going to take FOR-EVER because it's with cables. :) This will be good practice and help me get more comfortable with cabling. I can't wait to try making more wire crochet necklaces, but need to find a time to get down to a craft shop for supplies. So many Joann stores have closed/moved out of Phoenix that I need to travel a ways to get to one. At least there are still some Michaels craft stores near by though.

Wire Crochet Necklace with amethyst! That's about all I had time for craftwise this weekend between working, cleaning, and watching Harry Potter movies.

This is the 2nd piece I've made using wire. I think the amethyst is pretty-and I've always liked it best of all semi-precious stones.

State Fair

It's almost time for the State Fair! I'm planning on entering some items in the competitive craft contest this year! A few things from my etsy shop are being entered too, so about 5 items have been temporarily unlisted so they may contend! Mostly my tatted necklaces and mini tatted doilies. I'm also entering a couple fine white crochet doilies.

So now I'm thinking...geez the shop is a-looking a bit empty eh? Going to try and work on getting more items up in the next week. I've also been reading up on wire crochet with beads and visited some bead shops. What I have learned: beads are EXPENSIVE! :) I saw some beads at the bead shop that were like $5 just for one bead! But man, are those swarovski crystals pretty...and wire crochet is addictive!

Happy that we are 1 month closer to October, which will bring cooler weather, and of course Halloweeeeen! Looking forward to being able to walk outside without the 107 degree weather. On the home front I am finally finishing up the Harry Potter series. I've been listening to them on audio- which has been fantastic, and am now half way thru book 7. And whilst listening to Harry Potter I've completed a few projects:

Socks for dad: of all crafts, socks always seem to take me the longest. If I accommodate someone's request for handknit socks, then you know I'm extremely fond of that person! Do I get second sock syndrome? (make one sock and get bored with completing 2nd) YES! But I managed to power thru on these and gave them to my dad yesterday. He was happy and it was all worth it. My reward was I got to use fixation yarn.
Garden party Necklace: I wanted to mix some tatting and crochet together for something dainty and elegant. Mission accomplished! It took me 2 days just to complete a portion of tatted lace that I was satisfied with. This lace is shuttle tatted with size 10 cotton and I think it really worked up nicely in green. Have gotten much more comfortable with using beads in my work now too. Finally digging into my stash of loose costume pearls and putting them to good use!

Batman Knitted Cuff!: Experimenting with some superhero stuff lately. I originally planned to duplicate stitch over black background to make the logo pop- but decided to try cross stitching it instead. What a trip down memory lane! Before I took up knitting and crochet about a 2 years ago, I worked on uber-big cross stitches and then framed them. For this cuff, I stitched on waste canvas to ensure that all my "x"s lined up.

Thunder, Thunder, THUNDER CATS! HOOO!:
Yes! I am a thundercats fan and have always liked the logo. This block measures 11.5" x 12.5 " and was single crocheted in worsted acrylic using two colors, two-stranded technique. Two strands are carried throughout the piece, making it double thick and reversible too! The Thundercats intro if you are feeling nostalgic.

Pearls of Wisdom Necklace: First attempt at wire crochet. It is very fun! Costume pearls and faceted beads with size 28 gauge golden wire. Beaded portion of necklace measures 21.5"
Can't wait to make more!

Whew, it's been a busy last few days around the house. Remodeling will hopefully wrap up end of week and as you can see Pergo is now installed! It is very nice and we had a super installation crew. Craftwise, I made a 1980's tribute cuff, flower doily, and special pendants, which will be up on etsy soon! This is a shot of the pendants being starch blocked to hold their shape. There are a lot of geometric angles and points that I want to come out just right. Might make some matching chains for them tomorrow.

Socks for Dad

As a b-day present for my dad I've offered to make him some custom handknit socks. The yarn.. "fixation," of course. He picked taupe (featured above). This is super awesome sock yarn. 98.3% cotton and 1.7% elastic, it has all the softness and comfort of cotton with just the right amount of stretch! I have made socks with it before and was really pleased with the product. A little more expensive than other sock yarns, but definately worth it..... I am especially looking forward to trying the 2-socks-at-a-time technique using 2 circular needles. I hope to start on it sometime this weekend. In meantime, been working working on a some mini crochet flower motifs. May use them in a doily or link them together for a bracelet. They are so dainty!

Swapped this necklace with etsy seller banadura for some awesome wool and alpaca handspun yarns. Absolutely Gorgeous and I can't wait to work with them. Yeah, I'm already thinking baby booties again. :) The necklace was a custom request and is based off the image below. It is called a "Tree of Life" pendant. The challenge: how to make it by tatting with cotton thread. So after staring at the photo of the metal pendant for about an hour and a half I finally got it: individual tatted rings joined by long picots! And then STARCH block! I'm way proud of how it turned out.

Okay so not only did I get to craft this weekend, so did home depot. They replaced our vinyl in baths and kitchen with tile! Well, I think there's a difference. Know we will be happy we did it in the long term, even tho the project was $$$! It has taken 3 men about 4 days to get everything installed and the diagonal makes things a little more complicated, because they have to make all these little triangles to fit the gaps. Looks pretty snazzy eh? I'm stressed but am getting better. I am very competent in the fiber arts, but when it comes to tile and laying tile I have no knowledge or skill. I must give all my control and power over to Home Depot to do it. That's a little hard- but so far so good.

Meanwhile:
Let's see whats being starched today shall we! A tatted pendant for a friend (upper left), free-form crochet fish (middle), medium sized secret tat (lower left), tatted bead earrings (lower right) and a crochet lace heart doily. I may post a few of these items on etsy too.

Looking forward to a relaxing and fun Sunday. Workmen are coming back Monday, so I can even sleep in! Woo hoo!

Cookie Monster Baby Booties

Cookie Monster fans, this one's for you. My project for today was working on these. Had so much fun making the butterfly ones I thought I'd make these. The eyes were hand crocheted and then appliqued. Crochet button fastens straps. Will get back to tatting before the end of the weekend. A friend of mine has challenged me with a custom order for a tatted pendant and I can't wait to start.

I was compelled to pick up my knitting needles today. Something about knitting always feels very controlled, precise, and perfect to me and I think I just needed that today. Our home is being remodeled and things are a bit chaotic. It will be a few days until the job is done. I was antsy and needed a project. So I made 2-hour baby booties! Too cute and I got the instant gratification I needed. Pattern is from Stitch 'n Bitch nation.

Tattin' with flair! I'm going a little bead crazy lately. Found out about this technique called beanile (www.beanile.com) and am totally impressed by the amazing results of beading + tatting. These pics on the right are some little motifs I've been working on the last couple days. The flower tatted motif may evolve into a pendant or necklace or bracelet... only time will tell! Btw..any Asi a fans here?

Industrious Weekend

It zoomed by, but was a good weekend. I had a lot of craft time and posted several new items to the shop.
Secret tats, a cro-tat bracelet and the tatted pendant (shown on the left) all went up! I'm especially pleased with this pendant. It's needle tatted and the stitches formed just perfectly. The black thread looks so elegant. I'm already getting the urge to make more!

Busy week ahead- we are remodeling on the homefront. New pergo flooring and replacing vinyl flooring areas with tile. Woo hoo! It will be very fiber friendly flooring :)

Saturday at the Shop

Okay! Got my butterfly doily and secret tat lot posted to etsy shop. Very pleased with how it all turned out and so far having a great day. Had breffe out with friends, got Sees Candy, and crafted with the hottest spinner around.

I will start on new tatting project soon. Going to visit family in a few weeks and want to have some gifts ready to go. Maybe a tatted bracelet with beads? I'm into using beads lately.

"Butterfly Trap" Doily

Ah! Finally done with the butterfly doily. Logged about 25 hrs. of work on this one! 100% hand crocheted with charming pastels and beaded-picot border. This is a picture of it being blocked, the little yellow and white specs are actually pins. I am letting it dry over night like this and then tomorrow will remove pins and take some "artistic" photos of it in action! My bf had a great idea to add little beaded eyes to the butterflies. Cute idea. Now they have little expressions.

This is the magazine I got the butterfly doily pattern from. It is "Magic Crochet" Feb 1994 Vol. 88. Got it from a totally awesome coworker. I guess you used to be able to subscribe to this mag, but no longer. I've seen some back issues for sale on etsy and ebay- but no new issues. Lots of neat Japanese crochet patterns and charts too.

Keeping it Fresh

So I was talking with a professional storyteller today and we discussed the performing arts and keeping it fresh with what you do. Our brains love to categorize, name, and label. Most artists do not want to feel like they are perceived to only have limited talents. For example, my storyteller friend is trying to reinvent herself through new stories and collaboration efforts with other artists. My personal crafting goal is to push myself beyond following published patterns and work harder to create my own. There can be a lot of trial and error but the thing I love about thread & yarn is you can always snip, rip, and start over! Butterfly doily progressing very well. Now onto border and I can't wait to block it!
